I was frustrated. I wanted to know how to read.
From that point on I was determined to read like my sister. I didn't want to have to depend on anyone to make sense of letters on the page. I wanted it for myself.
When I was in first grade I would go to the library and pick out a sack full of books. I would devour them. I could not get enough.

Although the book choices may have changed, the desire to learn and read has not gone away.
When I saw that Anne was having a "carnival" to share a book that changed your life I was overwhelmed by options.
"The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom.
"Grace for the Good Girl" by Emily Freeman.
James in the New Testament of the Bible (kicked by booty this fall with Beth Moore's Bible study).
When pondering this list of mine I realized the common threads through them.
- Faith in God.
- God can and does use 1 person to do amazing things. They just need to be willing and available.
- Eternity Matters.
- We're part of a bigger story.
- These stories impact many people on a daily basis, including mine.
I have a painting hanging in my living room of Eastern Europe with cannons in it. It may seem morbid to some, but to me it is a reminder of how short life is. We can all make a difference for eternity if we are willing to stand up and let God move in us.

Ooo, I love the common themes you pulled from these books. I'm terrible at pattern recognition so I really appreciate that skill in others :)
ReplyDeleteI'm also noticing that you've picked two books that I've been thinking of reading (The Hiding Place and Grace for the Good Girl). And James has had a profound impact on me, too. Our son's middle name is James, and that's why.
Thanks for sharing! (And I love that watercolor!)
I think my skills of pattern recognition come from my time in counseling groups ;) Obviously I think they are great reads! You'll have to tell me what you think! There's another book after The Hiding Place that Corrie wrote that's great as well.
DeleteI loved The Hiding Place and the book of James also! And I loved this post.
ReplyDelete"My love of reading feeds my love of writing. Words change people." Yes, this. Why my face is often buried in a book or my fingers are clacking away on the keyboard. It changes me and hopefully, it changes others too.
Thanks Alia ;) We find even more in common!
DeleteNeat blog! I just ordered the James study by Beth Moore -- starting it in a week or so. I'm excited to know it is a life changing study! :) Visiting from the Spinning Mama's blog.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you stopped by! Yes, it had a big impact on this girl =)
