In college one of my guy friends used to take girls on a dollar store date. He would give them $5 and a certain amount of time to buy stuff that represents them. Then they would go to coffee and talk about the items. Sharing funny stories and getting to know each other being the point. I never forgot hearing about this and thought it sounded like fun! (& by the way he married my roommate & he woo-ed her well!)
A few years ago my husband and I tweaked this idea and used it in our small group. We each had $5 to spend and 30 minutes to pick out items that represented our spouse. The half an hour flew by as we giggled and tried to avoid each other keeping our items secret. Within 45 minutes we had paid and were headed to the local coffee house to laugh for the next 2 hours. Side splitting laughter.
I can remember a few items I purchased representing my husband. A horrible smelling box of perfume with a guy on it that I thought looked like Paul. It was hilariously awkward. A puzzle of Mickey Mouse was purchased because we headed to the magical World of Disney for our honeymoon. And the last item I remember was an animal that looked like one from Madagascar - one of the movies we watched when we were dating.
If only we had Instagram back then I would’ve probably filled the feed with pictures of laughter and random items.
As the evening came to an end we all had a chance to hear 10 things in these couples lives in a lively, fun way.
So, what do you think? I’d love for some of you to try it! A spin on the elementary show and tell. Remember, If you’re concerned about waste, after you’re done, donate the items. Come back and let me know if you do!
If you had to pick 1 dollar store item to represent something in your life, what would it be?
I love this idea! What a great way to get to know each other. Maybe we will do it for our employee Christmas party.=)
Tell me how it goes! =)
Virginia,
I love the idea! I wish we had a $1 store.
Is there a fun market or a trinket shop?
I love this! If I ever get to be married, this will surely occur!
Yay! You’re so fun and sweet! So glad we met!
This is so cute, V. I might actually try this date with my son. He’d love to pick out stuff, and it would be a good conversation starter. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Probably on Instagram.
What a great idea to do it with your son! Bonding time and great memories! Please tag me on Instagram when you do!
I love this idea, V!
Thanks Beth! =)
