Don’t Let Others Hush Your Song

My daughter was pulling her second dress over top of her two shirts and two skirts to get the maximum volume. At four she has blasted into the fashion world of color clashing and layering. Tip toes and twirls mix in as she puts the finishing touches on her outfit. Singing the entire time.

This is a daily routine in our home. On this particular day I was tired. I wanted rest and didn’t get it. In the midst of her joy-filled moment I hushed her. I quieted her song. Selfishly.
Looking back on this I want to wrap my arms around her and tell her,
“Don’t let others hush your song, and I’m sorry I did. There will be times in life that others blinded by their own situations will want you to quiet your love for God and this life. Don’t do it. Don’t lose this wonder. Keep dancing.”
The Lord gives me strength.
He is like a shield that keeps me safe.
My heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart jumps for joy.
I will sing and give thanks to him. ~ Psalm 28:7 (NIRV)
God, change our hearts and minds. We can’t do this on our own.

When do you find yourself hushing other people’s joy? Are you tired? Fearful? Worried?

I think I find myself tired a lot, just worn out, and getting frustrated with those around me. Thanks for the reminder not to stifle but to spur on.
