Have I told you how excited I am to be a Tommy Mommy? I get to review amazing books for kids and share them with you. Today I’m sharing Ruth Bell Graham’s One Wintry Night.
The illustrations are gorgeous in this short chapter book that follows a boy lost in a snowstorm and hearing the story of Jesus for the first time. The entire story from Jesus’ birth through His resurrection. Although the book is geared for 4-7 year olds, my son and daughter sit through multiple chapters at a time. It is definitely a new Christmas tradition in our home.

Sounds like this would be a really fun new Christmas tradition. Would like to start something like this for my grandchildren!!!
One family tradition that was my very favourite (and yet made me the most skwirmy kid) was that my Mom would get up early to make breakfast and set the table (and drink her coffee) on Christmas morning. My Dad did NOT get up quite so early and my siblings and I weren’t allowed to go downstairs until Dad had gone down.
So all four of us would sit at the top of the stairs, and we’d try to crane our necks to see the presents that had arrive overnight.
While we never really celebrated Santa (to be honest I can’t remember what my parents said about him), my Mom always waited until Christmas Eve after we were all in bed to wrap and put the presents under the tree.
Once my Dad FINALLY came out of his room, we would scurry downstairs, glance at at the tree with glee, kiss my Mom and Dad, and sit down for breakfast.
We’ve always had cinnamon buns, orange juice, and chocolate! It’s the best breakfast ever. Some years we got to open a present before breakfast or our stockings but mostly we just waited until after breakfast. My Dad would read from Luke 2, and then we would celebrate. We each opened one gift at a time and it was so much fun.
Christmas was always a magical day because my parents managed to keep Jesus as the focus but also really celebrate us kids.
